The ICT Association of Malawi (ICTAM) held a productive engagement meeting with the Malawi Communications Regulatory Authority (MACRA) at MACRA’s Chichiri Head Offices in Blantyre, aimed at strengthening collaboration and advancing Malawi’s ICT sector. During the meeting, ICTAM President Mr. Clarence Gama outlined the Association’s key strategic priorities for the year. These include contributing to the development of the National Artificial Intelligence Policy, supporting the formulation and review of ICT-related policies and procedures, and playing an active role in driving national digital transformation. MACRA’s Acting Director General, Mr. Mayamiko Nkoloma, acknowledged ICTAM’s strategic importance within Malawi’s ICT ecosystem and encouraged the Association to further amplify its voice in advocating for improved quality of service across the sector. He emphasized the need for strong collaboration between regulators and industry stakeholders, particularly in addressing emerging challenges such as mobile money fraud and other issues affecting both consumers and service providers. The engagement reaffirmed the shared commitment between MACRA and ICTAM to work closely in building a robust, secure, and inclusive ICT sector, aligned with Malawi’s broader development and digital transformation goals.

The ICT Association of Zambia vice president Dr Serah Beza Mbewe and Committee Member Ms Malala Simungala attended the 2025 ICT Association of Malawi Annual General Meeting, Innovation Awards, and Training in Mangochi, Malawi, held under theme “AI for sustainable development: Advancing Malawi digital future”. Dr Serah Mbewe, who is also the ICT Director at Levy Mwanawasa Medical University made a presentation under the topic “Transforming education with AI: Personalized Learning and Smart Classroom” that outlined the use of AI in the education sector. The event gathered over 400 participates from the ICT sector from several sectors including education, agriculture, Fintech, banking and development agencies. Malawi’s Republican Vice President Jane Ansah called on information technology professionals to uphold professionalism, ethics and integrity to protect the reputation of their field. Stating that the IT sector plays an important role in driving the economy. “I am happy with this gathering because it is where you share knowledge on ICT and explore ways to advance the country. I am particularly pleased with the theme because it focuses on AI. Therefore, I urge you to leverage these skills so that you can help drive the country’s economy,” she said. Earlier this year, ICTAM President Clarence Gama attended and addressed the 2025 ICTAZ AGM, marking the continued collaboration between the two countries and the advancement of the ICT sector on the continent. Young innovators have been challenged to take a leading role in shaping Malawi’s digital future, a push that places people, creativity, and long-term opportunities at the centre of national development. This has come out at the ICTAM Conference in Mangochi which brought together ICT professionals, policymakers, innovators, and development partners discussing the country’s digital direction and the role of technology in improving lives. In her speech, guest of honour Vice President Jane Ansah encouraged ICT professionals to uphold strong professional and ethical values as they shape Malawi’s digital future. She stressed that technology should be used to expand opportunities for all citizens, particularly young people who stand at the forefront of innovation. In his speech, National Bank of Malawi (NBM) plc Head of Corporate Banking Division, William Chatsala said the Bank wants to see young innovators driving solutions that change lives and strengthen the country’s digital economy. He said the initiative aligns with NBM plc’s broader strategy to deepen financial inclusion, expand digital payment solutions, and encourage homegrown ideas that meet global standards. “Our goal was clear, ensure promising ideas do not stop at concept stage, but move toward prototypes, commercialisation, and real impact. Today, we see that vision taking shape. Alumni are developing fintech tools, enterprise systems, e-commerce platforms, and community solutions that are already changing how Malawians live and work,” he said. ICTAM President Clarence Gama said the association remains committed to fostering innovation and ensuring that both rural and urban communities fully benefit from technological progress.
